Music scales for beginners: why you can't play a wrong note

Updated ยท 4 min read

A scale is the set of notes a piece of music uses, picked from the 12 notes of an octave. Major sounds bright, natural minor sounds sad or dark, and modes such as Dorian and Phrygian sit in between. In EASY RAVE you pick a ROOT and a SCALE once, and the bass, chords and lead can only play notes that fit, so nothing clashes.

What is a musical scale?

An octave has 12 different notes. A scale picks some of them, usually 7, and leaves the rest out. Music written with only the notes of one scale sounds "in key", because those notes are chosen to sit well together.

Two things define a scale:

  • The root: the home note, like C or A. The music feels resolved when it lands there.
  • The pattern: which of the 12 notes are used, counted up from the root.

C major and A minor use the same 7 notes but feel different, because each one treats a different note as home.

What do the main scales sound like?

These are the 9 scales in EASY RAVE's SCALE menu, with their notes when the ROOT is C:

ScaleNotes from CMood
MajorC D E F G A BBright, happy, settled
Natural MinorC D Eb F G Ab BbSad, dark, emotional
DorianC D Eb F G A BbMinor but warmer: funk, jazz, deep house
PhrygianC Db Eb F G Ab BbDark and tense: techno, metal, Spanish flavour
Harmonic MinorC D Eb F G Ab BDramatic, a little exotic
Penta MinorC Eb F G BbOnly 5 notes, very hard to sound wrong
Penta MajorC D E G A5 bright notes, folk and pop melodies
BluesC Eb F F# G BbMinor pentatonic plus the gritty "blue" note
Chromaticall 12 notesNo lock at all

If you are not sure, start with Natural Minor. Most electronic music lives there, and it is what EASY RAVE uses when it first opens (C Natural Minor).

Why can't you play a wrong note in EASY RAVE?

Because the key is set once for the whole rack. Choose a ROOT and a SCALE at the top of the screen and:

  • the AC 303 piano roll shows the notes of the scale, so every note you click fits
  • the number keys play scale notes when a machine is in LIVE mode
  • RANDOM writes acid lines from the scale, and SING snaps your voice to it (see hum a bassline)
  • POLY-6 builds its 7 chord pads from the scale, so every chord fits
  • THERE LEAD plays scale notes from the number keys, and its HARMONY adds voices that stay in the scale
  • SAMPLE KING has an AUTOTUNE knob that snaps a sample's pitch to the key

Change the ROOT and everything moves together. That is why you can try ideas fast: a bassline, a chord and a melody you made in different minutes still belong to the same song.

Which scale should you use for each genre?

GenreScales to try
House and deep houseNatural Minor, Dorian
TechnoNatural Minor, Phrygian
AcidNatural Minor, Phrygian, Penta Minor
Lo-fi and neo-soulDorian, Major
PopMajor, Natural Minor
Blues, funk, rock riffsBlues, Penta Minor

These are habits, not rules. A happy major-key techno track is allowed.

How do pentatonic scales work with chords?

Pentatonic and Blues scales have fewer than 7 notes, so they cannot build the usual 7 chords on their own. In EASY RAVE, POLY-6 builds its chords from the full minor or major scale that the pentatonic comes from, while the bass and lead keep the smaller set of notes. You get simple, safe melodies over complete chords.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest scale for beginners?

The minor pentatonic scale. It has only 5 notes and no two of them clash, so almost any order sounds musical. In C it is C, Eb, F, G and Bb. In EASY RAVE, choose Penta Minor in the SCALE menu.

What is the difference between major and minor scales?

The third note. A major scale has a major third (4 semitones above the root), which sounds bright. A minor scale has a minor third (3 semitones), which sounds darker. The sixth and seventh notes usually differ too.

What scale is techno in?

There is no fixed scale, but most techno uses minor scales: natural minor for a moody sound and Phrygian for a darker, tense one. Many techno basslines use only 2 or 3 notes of the scale.
